Within the framework of the “Scholen van Morgen”-project, we were offered to design a brand new school campus. We envisioned this campus to act as an intermediate between its urban and rural surroundings, and to be a place where pupils are provided with the most advanced educational context and contemporary sustainability standards. The team of designers and its collective of contributors made sure, with special attention to clarity and structure, to place special needs education and care at the heart of the campus. To live up to this ambition, both the classrooms and the (semi-)public spaces are organised in an adaptive manner that enlarges the spatial flexibility. The connection between environment and campus, as well as the flexibility of the rooms, turn every corner into a multifunctional space that can be modified to serve a variety of events and activities. Flexibility wasn’t the project’s only goal, as we also aimed at deploying sustainable measures that ensure the campus’ safe future. In order to do so, we compacted the various functions on two floors, while maintaining certain access to the terrain. This makes the building more efficient in terms of costs and energy, while preserving its relationship with its natural surroundings. This way, the building serves as a welcoming environment to all who will visit the campus on various occasions.
